First Floor

Associate Member Yorkshire and the Humber

First Floor is the West Yorkshire Playhouse's creative space for young people it exists to engage young people aged 11 – 19 (14-25 for those with a learning disability) through participation in the arts, supporting their personal, social and creative development and helping them find positive pathways forward in life. First Floor is open 6 days a week 3 evenings a week for young people to take part in a wide range of activities and courses. A typical day sees 20 – 50 young people coming through the doors to access one off sessions, weekly courses or projects.
Young people help set the priorities for First Floor at monthly Friendly Faces meetings. Sessions are delivered by Leeds based freelance artists, many of whom are practising professionally in their field, with assistance from trained support workers and volunteers. The dedicated staff team get to know each young person and can help them decide what to do, how to progress and extend their skills or experience and help them to engage even when they have family, personal or social issues which affect their day to day lives.
